Merle Sowry

It’s with sadness that we mourn the recent death of Swimming Wairarapa and Swimming Wellington Life Member,  Merle Sowry.

Merle Sowry first got involved with swimming back in 1965/6 when her 4 sons took an interest in swimming and they joined the Masterton Swimming Club.

Merle was a very active member of both the Masterton Swimming Club Committee and also the Fundraising Committee that was formed to help with the build of the first indoor pool in the Wairarapa. Merle held down the position of Club Secretary for a number of years and in her later years was the Club Patron.

Merle was a Swimming New Zealand qualified Referee, with this qualification it saw Merle officiate at a number of national meets, also officiating at 3 Commonwealth Games (Christchurch 1974, Brisbane 1982 & Auckland 1990).

Merle was recognised for the work that she did for the sport of swimming and was presented her Life Member awards for Masterton Swimming Club, Swimming Wairarapa, Swimming Wellington and an Honours Award from Swimming New Zealand.

Merle passed away on the 9th July 2019.
