2020 Long Course Championships

Wellington's largest Long Course meet of the year took place from January 18th-20th over Wellington's Anniversary weekend at the Regional Aquatic Centre. 370 swimmers participated in a fiercely competitive meet that saw swimmers from 35 clubs thrash it out at the start of 2020. A Swimming New Zealand development team and a Fijian team traveled to WRAC to challenge the local and out of town clubs on the podium and each event saw a variety of headline names from around the country race.

The meet took place over 6 sessions and saw Chelsey Edwards topple two New Zealand records. First in the 200m Freestyle on Day One, dropping 1.37s from her heats time in a time of 2:00.06. She then went on to beat her own 50m Freestyle record registered in Queensland in December, with a time of 25.64s.

Wellingtonians Sam Brown (160), Finn Harland (159) and Timothy Cherry (156) were the top age group winners and there were Wellington records for Lewis Clareburt, Sophie Irving, Jenna Rolston-Larking and Molly Player. The latter swam her first regional record in a time of 2:24.93 in the 14yr old 200m Backstroke.

Capital maintained their dominance at the top of the Club Points leaderboard for the 6th successive year with a points tally of 1,846. Pirates provided the closest challenge coming in second with a total of 1,091.50. With Opens taking place in March and NAGs in April, Wellington's clubs will be looking to build strong squads ahead of nationals in Auckland and Wellington in the coming months.
