Junior Champions 2020: Review

The final meet of a disrupted year concluded 2020, as Wellington's junior champs ran over 2 days of competition on the 12 & 13 December.

This was the final Juniors meet to be held in December as the Championships move to September in 2021. 238 swimmers took part, across 24 clubs, of which 14 were from out of region. Bay of Islands swim club (Northland) came down for a second year and strong squads represented Coast (Auckland) and Tasman (Nelson-Marlborough). The home clubs all had a good showing with 160 swimmers coming from the Wellington & Wairarapa.

Charlie Dickison continued to re-write record books as he toppled 5 regional records in total across the two days, 4 of which replaced times made by Jack Plummer in 2013. Eric Yuan from Porirua City Aquatics clocked his first region record in the final race of the weekend with a time of 29.62 in the 50 Fly. The performance of the weekend however came from Tawa's Hunter Lloyd, who stretched out in the 200IM to set a new New Zealand age group record, beating Michael Minchum's record from 2009. Hunter's time of 2:22.81 came in 0.01s under the record and set the tone for an impressive haul of 13 golds and 1 silver throughout the meet.

PCA came away with the 12 & under title for the 3rd successive year with 1,343 points over the course of the weekend, strong competition came from Capital Swim Club and Tawa Swimming Club in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
