Wellington Harbour Challenge 2021

The Wellington Harbour Challenge once again saw a picturesque waterfront sunrise greet the swimmers on a warm final weekend of February. The 2021 event saw an increase in participants and support from local businesses as the open water season builds year on year. With some of the regions largest events such as Six60's Sky Arena gig and Wellington's Round the Bays evading Level 2 event restrictons, there was half an eye out for government announcements. Thankfully, the event remained unaltered and racing began as planned and on schedule at 8am.

James Van Der Voort from Porirua City Aquatics was first out of the water with a time of 15:51 in the male 1.25km. He was followed by Ella Drummond from Capital Swim Club who finished first in the female 1.25km with a time of 16:55. In the 2.5km distance Neve Tassicker pulled away from her closest competitors to finish with a time of 32:57 and Anton Nadilo was the first male, finishing with a time of 39.55. Ruby Heath and Joseph Stewart, with times of 1:03:23 and 56:14, both won golds in the 5km, proving a timely reminder of Wellington's open water pedigree after their success at Nationals in mid-January.
